How's that for a formal statement of the obvious!

Instead of the traditional prevacation "snotgram" the District mailed each teacher a form explaining that if we had accepted the T.A. back in June with what amounted to a 6.5% pay increase (over 2 years) we would currently be making MORE money.

The Blog Committee would like to formally thank Mitch and Ted for spending district funds to provide us with a statement of the painfully obvious.

What would really be helpful is to see the same calculations for ... let's say ... a Colton-like settlement of more 10% for the same period. Why should Yucaipa and Calimesa teachers settle for less?

Even with the offer the district has made, our salaries continue to fall further behind those of our colleagues in other districts. The real issue is why are Yucaipa teachers worth less than teachers in other districts? Young teachers, get out while you can. More senior teachers, is it really worth it to stay for the few thousand dollars you will lose if you lose age credit when you transfer to a better district? By all reasonable accounts, the situation in Yucaipa is getting worse, not better. COLA is a cost of living adjustment, not a cost of LITIGATION adjustment. Sadly, I have no confidence that the board or district will do the right thing. It's all just a game to those in power. It's time for all of us to consider moving to a district which sees its teachers a a valuable part of the educational process, not as pawns to badmouth in the public forum.

We shouldn't settle for less. We should get our COLA settlement like everyone else has. We are not cry-babies; we are hard-working, highly educated, and highly experienced. We have earned our COLA that the state gave US and the district. The district needs to understand that COLA is our money too. Keeping it from the teachers is just dishonest.

We know about COLA in Hayward. It is what the state pays our district so they can raise the superintendent's salary.

Why is it so hard for the district, board, and apparently some of the public to realize that we've figured out that there is a difference between 9% less benefits and 10% plus benefits?

I guess the "good" news is that Mitch probably won't be getting a raise soon! The rumor mill has been grinding regarding Mitch's many transgressions, and I don't think that the board wants to buy out another $100K+ salary (Remember Stu?). Still, I don't think that the Board's displeasure with Mitch will help us in any way. Too bad Mitch can't find another position on his own, but none of our District administrators who are looking have had much success lately (Hi Sherry!). I think that this is the "new" image of Yucaipa - the administrative "Roach Motel".

More remedial math for the board: Big numbers are better than little numbers when talking about teacher salaries. Here's a graphic to make my point for the visual learners on the board:

Little Number: XXXXXX
Big Number: XXXXXXXXXXX

Get it?

Go Hayward, thanks for the support!
