The Board of Education would like the public to believe that Yucaipa teachers are greedy, overpaid and not deserving a fair cost of living increase. They seem to quickly forget how much we subsidize the YCJUSD through the purchase of books, Xerox copies, field trip costs, science supplies, etc.

$1721 - books, credential, xerox copies (we got cut way back at our site), gifts for classroom volunteers. I could give myself a big pay raise by not spending on my classroom

spouse and i--different districts--have receipts for $1,239 (him) and $1,020 (me). how many dollars went to un-receipted incidentals; fundraisers; 'here's some lunch money, honey'--gotta be in the many hundreds.
today i bought 4 boxes of tissues and some cheesy/cheap b-day presents. lost the receipt--close to $20.
At the high school, we used to be paid $25.00 per hour for tutoring students. Several years ago, this program was dropped. At the time, dropping this tutoring program was passed off as a NCLB requirement (like so many of the District's injustices have been!). I still tutor, about thirty minutes per day, every day of the week. So, at $25.00 per hour X 90 hours per year, that's $2250.00 per year in donated time. Add that to the $10,000 that the Board hasn't paid me in raises for the past two years and now I'm really pissed. Also, how many of our community's after school clubs, sports, etc are run by Yucaipa teachers?

Tutoring should be paid at $35.00 hour since it's an intervention so you really donated $3,150 in services!

Rather than try to evoke sympathy from a Board and District with no sense of honor or integrity, what if we all stop paying out of our own pockets, and stop working for free? I have the nagging feeling that these posts are encouraging the Board - the teachers are still working for free and spending their own money, how mad could they be? The problem is, we keep trying to be parents to our students, instead of teachers. Any support for a total withdrawl of voluntary service, and ceasing to use our own money to support our classrooms? A true martyr needs to be clear about the price they are going to pay.
Count me as one in favor of a complete withdrawl of voluntary services until the contract is fairly settled.
We are not running a charity here. I love my students too, and I know they often need more of me than simply class time, HOWEVER.....the board continues to take advantage of us. Who else is going to stop them?

I completely agree. I'm ready to stop working for free and I'm done buying classroom supplies! I've really noticed the lack of a cost of living adjustment in my household income. As much as I love the kids in this district, my own kids come first. Buck up and pay your teachers YCJUSD.
Here's a thought: Take whatever money you spent on your classroom last year, and spend it on yourself or your family this year! Go to Europe, invest for College for your kids, buy a new car. If we stop paying the District's bills for them, maybe they'll start. Time for a little tough love... We need to stop giving these people the rope to hang us with!
I'm going to use the money I would have spent on my classroom this week to buy Mitch and Sheri one way Greyhound tickets to Calexico.
This was a pricey year for me. I took a week-long class over the summer and had to buy an updated version of Photoshop along with several books. I also had to buy several other books to keep in step with new trends in my subject area. The total for these and other usual expenses came to over $900. No, I am not rich; I just want to keep pace with the world so I can keep my students right along there with me. Something that concerns me more, though, is that I will retire still owning close to $10,000 in student loans that I needed to cover costs for my master's degree. That happens when you help put two kids through college while being a student at the same time!
