North Monterey County Parents Show Support for Teachers

Parents with children in the North Monterey County School District staged a MAJOR "sit-out" Friday to show their support for teachers who recently declared impasse for 2005-07 salary negotiations.

Parent Laurie Greco summed up things very well when she stated to the press, " I think this might show the district that parents will continue to stand behind their teachers." Greco's children attend Prunedale Elementary School where nearly 25% of students were absent Friday.

A parent action or a recall would be preferable to a strike. If we can either change the board's thinking, or change the board, perhaps we can end this ridiculous situation without harming kids. I don't want to strike, but I feel that our options are few. Also, the Press-Enterprise said that Jurupa just declared impasse, and guess what? THEIR average salary is one of the highest in the region too! Sound like a certain law firm might be giving their district advice?

I wonder if the law firm gets a cut of all the money it might save the district? As we know the same law firm is helping many districts.

Maybe Press Enterprise writer Cassie McDuff can do a total investigation into the new school with no road problem. It would be an interesting report to read.

I wonder if the district's law firm is saving the district any money at all, or just finding a new place to spend the district's money. Considering how many legal irons our district has in the fire, I bet the actual cost of their lawyers is huge.

Yes, it's huge. You'll be seeing a flyer tomorrow that shows a $1.2 MILLION increase in the "consulting" budget - the one that includes legal fees - since October. Apparently their legal costs have far exceeded what they planned for, and they'd much rather pay lawyers than settle with the teachers.

1.2 million in consulting fees????? Holy Cats, what the heck! I see this as a real crime! Especially when I asked for money to accompany students to an educational outing and got told there is no money for a sub! Gee I wonder why? This does not take a brain surgeon to figure out. If our administration needs that much consulting going on, then why are they in the administration position? Gee teachers, if we all needed that much consulting to do our jobs, would we have jobs? Come on people lets get real! It seems to me that it is time for the public to start holding this district accountable for their money, time for some state intervention maybe?! As a teacher of the district I am shocked, as a parent of the district I am mad at the blatent misuse of my tax money!

$1,200,000 is probably about $3000 per classroom! That's an outrage. Just think what a classroom teacher could do with $3000! What a waste of taxpayer dollars. I wish Dateline would do an investigation into the waste and poor senior management of the YCJUSD.

Once when I asked for a sub. to go on a student field trip - the District said "No Money for a sub." At the timethe District was sending many teachers to meeting and hiring subs. So I filled out a form for personnel necessity leave so I could take the students on the field trip I was willing to use one of my sick days to go on the field trip. When I comnpleted the form - and turn it in - the district decided that it could hire a sub.
I thought it was odd. I forced the issue.

Wow, 1.2 million? They could even put in an artificial turf and track at the high school with that kind of money... Do they have another 1.2 million laying around for that too? All a matter of priorities I guess...

I hereby offer my services as a Consultant to the YCJUSD. I believe that I can bring a speedy resolution to this crisis for 25% of the cost of our present legal counsel. I am willing to work hard to preserve the Board's free health and welfare benefits.

Adam Hartman of the Press Enterprise does a nice job. The PE will print info about Yucaipa.
Mr. Hartman taught English at Cal State a few years ago. He enjoys being a reporter. He likes being a report.
