Some Things Just Never Change!

One of our veteran colleagues was cleaning out her classroom the other day, and found an old "Mini Bolt" from 1986. In addition to some information about health benefits and professional growth, there was this:

Negotiations Update - September 1986

The negotiations team has now met with the board's representatives eight times for over fifty hours, including a meeting on Thursday, September 18. Not only is progress slow, but the two sides are still a considerable distance apart, particularly on money issues. The negotiations team is concerned with the need to maintain the position of Yucaipa's salary schedule as competitive with comparable districts.

Was a certain high school AP even out of diapers when this MiniBolt was written?

This is more evidence for my sad belief that the main problem is not the Board or the District office. Perhaps the culture of this community is to blame for the overall lack of respect for educators. If there is a "silent majority" of people in Yucaipa who believe otherwise, they need to speak up in support of us now, or the damage done may take years to reverse. I have heard the Board claim that they are only doing the bidding of the voting public. If this is true, we are doomed. If it is false, the Board needs to know this in no uncertain terms.

Those who do not understand the past are doomed to repeat it. What was the outcome in '86?

This is obviously a long term systemic problem with this school district. It's not only about getting new board members, it's about affecting a philosophy change within this school district. If that doesn't happen when it is time to negotiate for 07/08 we'll hear the same thing again. Step and column, health benefits, administrator salary (remember they now reach top step at 5 years).... Great deal for the admin and they truly do deserve it (well most of them anyway) but HELLO YCJUSD your teachers deserve it as well.

A big, hearty cheer to my favorite board member for losing her cool at the meeting tonight (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE). Your true character is showing through! And to think I thought you were asleep up there once again!

Did the other board members stop reading their mail and listen this time? I'm dying to see how our local paper spins this event!
